About the work

FullEnglishMuslim is a comment on modern day multi-cultural Britain and how the visible, religious and cultural heritage ethnic minorities present are perceived as a threat to our national identity and way of life. As the name suggests, the work creates an alternative, often satirical view of the mainstream narrative captured in the press and in popular culture about muslims and symbols of Britishness, to make us laugh, cry and despair at what it means to be British today.

Amir Sheikh received formal training in Visual Communication at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in London and the resulting 20 year career working as a designer for advertising agencies, technology companies and design consultancies in London and abroad is evident in the approach to his work. His great love for evocative imagery combined with bold intent is obvious and the use of mixed-media techniques, including digital, collage, illustration and paint, show his versatility in creating a variety of interpretations that expose the contradictions, tension and uncomfortable truths of a country built from a global empire of people drawn in from every corner of the world.

Amir was born to Pakistani parents in the industrial north (Middlesbrough, 1971) and spent his early childhood in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. His formative years played out in the small seaside town of Folkestone, Kent. He currently lives and works in London.
